stories from the field #2: Xai Xai, Mozambique

Team Xai Xai (Katrine, Horst, Marieke, & Me)

There are many great stories that came out of Xai Xai (pronounced Shy Shy) but I will focus on one I call "James 5:17."

Through the efforts of a dear friendie of mine, I was able to travel north 3 hrs from Maputo to a smaller town called Xai Xai to help put on a Pastor's Conference. Our kitchen was totally outdoors (as you can see) and we were havin a little problem with the rain for days before the conference was to start. So the group wanted Horst and I to take this tarp and (with little or no equipment) tie it up through the branches of these trees and across to the roof of a little shed (where I was takin the picture; and, NO, the shed couldn't have housed the kitchen). After surmising the situation I looked at Horst and said,"Well, what do u think?"

He said, in very broken english (he was German, by the way),"It's not gonna be easy."

THAT......was an understatement. So I sized up the situation again and said,"Well, we could do that. Orrrr....we could gather round and pray like Elijah did that it wouldn't rain?"

We liked that idea better so we gathered round and prayed the James 5:17 deal. It did not take as much faith as Elijah needed cause we only needed 3.5 days, whereas he got 3.5 years. And for the next 3.5 days it certainly DID NOT rain upon Xai Xai. Pretty sweet. The conference went off well. The Word was proclaimed, and God confirmed it with signs and wonders following. And on the way back to Maputo......."the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit".
